Operation Sindoor and Bunyan ul Marsoos: A Dangerous Escalation

Recent events indicate a significant escalation in tensions and military actions between India and Pakistan. Here's a summary of the situation as of Saturday, May 10, 2025:

Trigger: The immediate cause of the current escalation was a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the death of 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for supporting the militant group, The Resistance Front (TRF), which claimed responsibility. Pakistan has denied these allegations.

India's Response: Operation Sindoor

 * On May 7, 2025, India launched a series of missile strikes, codenamed "Operation Sindoor," targeting what it claimed were terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India reported hitting nine locations.

 * Indian officials described the strikes as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," aiming at the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

 * Following these strikes, India reported an increase in cross-border artillery shelling and small arms fire from Pakistan.

 * India also accused Pakistan of sending 300-400 drones into Indian territory across 36 locations on the night of May 8-9, claiming many were neutralized. Some reports suggest the use of Turkish-made SONGAR drones.

 * India activated 14 infantry battalions of its Territorial Army for heightened readiness.

 * India initially closed around 25 airports near the border but has since extended the closure and possibly added more airports due to the escalating tensions.

Pakistan's Response:

 * Pakistan condemned India's strikes, stating they hit civilian areas and resulted in casualties. They claimed to have shot down several Indian drones and warplanes, including Rafale, MiG-29, and Su-30 aircraft, although India has not confirmed these losses.

 * Pakistan reported increased artillery fire from India across the Line of Control, causing civilian casualties and damage.

 * On May 10, 2025, Pakistan announced the launch of "Operation Bunyan ul Marsoos" (Solid Wall of Steel) in response to "continuous provocation" by India, claiming to have struck "multiple targets" across India using medium-range Fateh missiles, including alleged missile storage facilities and airbases in Pathankot and Udhampur.

 * Pakistan's military released footage purportedly showing missiles being launched.

Border Situation:

 * Intense firing and shelling have been reported across the Line of Control.

 * Explosions and air raid sirens have been heard in various cities and border areas on both sides, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Lahore, and Karachi.

 * Blackouts have been reported in several cities in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan on the Indian side.

Diplomatic Measures:

 * Following the Pahalgam attack, both countries reportedly cancelled visas for each other's citizens, recalled diplomats, and closed their only land border crossing. India also reportedly suspended a crucial water-sharing treaty.

Casualties:

 * Both sides have reported civilian and military casualties. Reports indicate dozens killed and injured on both sides due to missile strikes and cross-border shelling. Pakistan claimed to have killed "40-50 Indian soldiers" in retaliation, while India reported killing numerous terrorists. These figures are difficult to independently verify.

International Response:

 * There have been calls for de-escalation and for both countries to engage in direct dialogue.

Overall Situation: The situation is highly volatile, with both nuclear-armed neighbors engaged in direct military actions and strong rhetoric. The current escalation appears to be more intense and widespread than previous skirmishes, raising concerns about a wider conflict.

It's important to note that information is still emerging, and the situation is rapidly evolving.
